More than 130 people have died at a hospital in El Fasher, Sudan, according to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). The city, a key location in Darfur, has seen escalating violence as Sudan’s army battles the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
El Fasher, the last major city in Darfur controlled by the army, has become a refuge for those displaced by ongoing conflict. Recent artillery shelling by the RSF has targeted residential areas, markets, and hospitals, causing significant casualties.
MSF reported treating 979 casualties in just over two weeks at South Hospital, with 134 deaths. Supplies are critically low and will only last a week, according to the UN. El Fasher’s Saudi and South hospitals are the last functioning medical facilities in the area, struggling under the intense violence.
Residents face severe shortages of food and water, and many are unable to leave their homes for safety or medical care. Journalist Mohamed Zakaria stated that fleeing the city is not an option due to the dangerous conditions.
UN experts warn that the Darfur region is at increased risk of genocide, with civilians being targeted based on ethnicity. The international community’s focus on other global conflicts has left the situation in Sudan precarious and dire.
