Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused Israel of violating a recent order from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) by hindering the delivery of vital aid to the Gaza Strip. This comes amidst ongoing concerns about the worsening humanitarian crisis in the region, PBS reported.
According to HRW, Israel has not adequately facilitated the entry of fuel and other essential supplies, hindering aid efforts and creating further hardship for the 2.3 million Palestinians living in Gaza. The rights group reported a 30% drop in the daily average number of aid trucks entering the territory since the ICJ ruling.
The ICJ, the top court of the United Nations, issued a preliminary order in February urging Israel to “moderate its war” and ensure the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the civilian population in Gaza. This followed accusations by South Africa that Israel’s actions in Gaza constitute genocide.
While Israel has maintained its right to control its borders and security measures, the international community and humanitarian groups have called for increased access to Gaza to alleviate the dire humanitarian situation. The UN has urged Israel to open more crossing points and expedite the flow of essential goods into the territory.
