UN Human Rights Chief Alarmed Over Abuse of Afghan Refugees in Pakistan

United Nations Human Rights Chief Volker Türk expressed deep concern over reports of abuse against Afghan refugees in Pakistan amid its forced mass deportation policy. Türk called for the suspension of the repatriation program until international law-compliant procedures are in place, urging an investigation into reported abuses by Pakistani authorities. Over 327,000 refugees have been repatriated, with concerns raised about arbitrary arrests, night raids, and property confiscation. Türk stressed the obligation to protect individuals facing harm in Afghanistan, especially women and girls vulnerable to restrictions imposed by de facto authorities. The situation highlights the complex challenges facing Afghan refugees in Pakistan.
